Cornelius Krieghoff

The Saint Anne Falls near Quebec from Above and Looking Upward

1854
Although born and trained in Amsterdam, Krieghoff is considered a Canadian painter, since virtually his entire career was conducted in this country. His genre scenes held popular appeal, but it was with his landscapes, which date principally from his time in Quebec City, that he made his mark. In this painting, which shows the river just above the falls, Krieghoff has devoted great care in capturing the colours and textures of the scene in all its diversity and richness.
