Pierre Bonnard

The Port of Cannes

1927
Having begun his career in Paris during the 1890s, Bonnard later migrated to France’s Mediterranean coast, known as the Côte d’Azur. In 1926 he purchased a villa a few kilometres north of the popular resort town of Cannes. This work portrays the waterfront during a period of inclement weather when sailboats are at rest on shore, creating a forest of brown mast poles against an overcast sky.
