Louis Marcoussis

The Numeralist (Self-portrait)

1940
A Polish-born, naturalized French citizen of Jewish origin, Louis Marcoussis fled Paris just three days before the Nazis advanced on the city in 1940. This print, one of sixteen from the series "Les Devins" (The Seers), was produced in the village of Cusset, near Vichy, where the artist sought refuge. In his striking self-portrait, made only a year before his death, Marcoussis casts himself as a numerologist poring over a sheet of numbers that includes an equation calculating the span of time between the Armistice and the beginning of the war.
