David Armstrong Six

The Janitor

2012
David Armstrong Six spent 2012 as an artist-in-residence in Berlin, Germany, where he produced these vertically oriented sculptures, combining raw and ready-made materials in dynamic compositions. The artist’s working methods are not dissimilar to the types of assemblage and object-making of early twentieth-century art, and his appreciation of cubism and surrealism echoes throughout the sculptures. As he states, “I am engaged in a series of simple procedures,” which “decompose and enter some form of distillation.” Titling the series Brown Star Plus One, Armstrong Six poetically describes them as “a set of perspectives from the starless diagram of an eternal night.”
