William Ronald

The Hero

1957
In this work Ronald explores the issue of scale in abstract painting. Using a large-sized canvas, he establishes a central image to dominate the composition and to create a feeling of monumentality. Using the entire sweep of his arm to describe the large head, and obliterating its identity by bold applications of colour and energetic line, he produces a mythic character whose image almost swells and bursts out of the frame.
