Cornelius Krieghoff

The Habitant Farm

1856
Krieghoff was one of the only Canadian artists to paint genre scenes, which were very popular in Europe and the United States. Influenced by his Dutch training, his work won Canadian admirers with its attention to minute detail in the portrayal of traditional habitant life in Quebec. This winter landscape features a wooden sleigh and a family wearing homespun clothing and knit toques, all bathed in soft winter light.
