Kerr-Lawson was a regular visitor to Italy throughout his life. This study was probably done on the painting trip he took in the spring of 1902. It is a study for one of the scenes in the Stoke Rochford Hall murals (1903-06), which inspired his series of lithographs, The Italian Set, in 1908. The Temple of Saturn was consecrated in 498 B.C. and rebuilt twice after that. To the right of the temple is the Baroque church of SS. Luca e Martina, designed by Pietro da Cortona and begun around 1634.
