George Romney

The Flight of Theseus and Ariadne from Minos

c. 1775-1780
A successful portraitist who longed to create grand historical paintings, Romney turned to such drawings as the present one as an outlet for his imaginative ideas. With swirling brushstrokes that convey the drama and emotion of the event, the artist here depicts the flight of the lovers Ariadne and Theseus from her father Minos, after she had helped Theseus escape from the Minotaur.
