The Fashionable Mamma - or - The Convenience of Modern Dress

15 February 1796
Below a poster promoting "maternal love," a viscountess sits nursing her child through convenient slits in her dress as a baron's carriage waits for her outside. The loose-flowing gown is the latest fashion introduced by Lady Charlotte Campbell in 1793. Breast-feeding was similarly in vogue among the upper classes, encouraged by the theories of the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
