The Drive

1912
The logging industry played a dramatic role in shaping the Northern Ontario landscape and was a source of economic prosperity. The labour involved, however, was difficult and dangerous. In this painting, dark clouds hang ominously over the hills in the background, while a striking contrast between light and dark mirrors the intensity of the figures’ efforts as they drive logs down the freezing river.
