Jacob van Ruisdael

The Cottage on the Hill

c. 1650-1659
After Rembrandt, Jacob van Ruisdael was the most expressive and original Dutch landscape artist of the Baroque period. This etching draws its power from the nervous lines and from the claustrophobic space dominated by the cluster of trees and the cottage perched precariously on a hill. Acquired in 1914, it was among the first European prints to enter the National Gallery of Canada’s collection.
