Charles Huot

The Construction of a Monastery

c. 1903
This sketch by Charles Huot, with its upper and lower numbering indicating that it is soon to be squared up, gives evidence of his academic training. Squaring made it easier to tranfer compositions to enlarged formats. Charles Huot regularly attended courses in history and archeology at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris so that he could better document his projects for religious or historical paintings. This scene is perhaps an event in the life of St. Patrick; the finished work (now destroyed) decorated the choir of the Church of St. Patrick in Quebec City.
