This pastoral scene of a young girl about to receive the Catholic sacrament of First Communion is one that is often repeated in the art of Morrice; at least two other related canvases exist. The subject was popular with French artists at the end of the 19th century, including Paul Gauguin, who also travelled and observed religious customs in Brittany.
