The Canada Southern Railway at Niagara

c. 1870
Ever since this painting became part of the Gallery's collection its subject has made it a favourite with the public. The site, portrayed by countless artists, is enhanced here by the presence of a train in the foreground and a suspension bridge in the distance. The efforts of several generations of researchers have revealed that other versions of the work exist, suggesting that multiple copies may have been commissioned to hang in the railway company’s offices and in hotels along its route.
