The Assumption of the Virgin

This drawing is not by Giovanni Lanfranco as the old inscription proposes, but by his lesser-known follower Beinaschi, who attempted to recreate the broad and spirited manner of his mentor. The verso of the sheet contains an unpublished drawing of a monk on an equally monumental scale. The drawing was once owned by the artist Joshua Reynolds, as was another sheet displayed here (no. 6134).
