Jutai Toonoo

The Arsenal

2012
Category:
From the mid-1990s until his untimely death in 2015, Jutai Toonoo created a body of work that in style and subject matter went against the grain of what had been most popular in Cape Dorset. Here the artist has translated a very personal traumatic experience – his mother’s cancer treatment – into oil stick, allowing the medium to be a conduit for his emotions. Despite this dark subject, the drawing inspires hope and courage; benevolent T cells have been enlarged vastly and float luminously within this meticulously rendered cellular composition.
