Hamilton MacCarthy

Tecumseh

1896
In 1895 the Toronto artist Hamilton MacCarthy established the Guild of Sculpture to organize exhibitions, lectures and training and to provide sculptures at a modest price. The following year he modelled busts of Sir Isaac Brock and Tecumseh that were distributed to the Guild's Art Union ticket holders and members. Both Brock and Tecumseh were prominent figures during the War of 1812. Tecumseh had allied himself with the British against the Americans but was killed in the Battle of the Thames in Moraviantown. The Commander of the British Forces in Canada, Brock, was killed in the Battle of Queenston Heights.
