Category:
Tabernacle City was a Methodist retreat on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, that consisted of numerous small gingerbread-style houses built around a central tabernacle. Aaron Siskind's discovery of this site in the early 1930s was a revelation for him. Two years into the Depression, many of the cabins were abandoned or for sale, and Siskind could explore the architecture freely, in its broad and detailed forms. In this image of a decorative window opening, Siskind delights in the simplicity of the architectural structure and applied decoration, as well as in the play of shadows on the clapboard walls.
