Sybilla Nitsman, Labrador 1988, from the series "The Distance between Two Points Is Measured in Memories"

1988
The works in "The Distance Between Two Points Is Measured in Memories" are based on interviews with elders from various cultures recalling their years in Labrador, and the ways in which traditions and relationships to the land have changed during their lifetimes. Creates asked them to draw "memory maps" of the places they describe, and she includes in the work photographs and occasionally objects from these landscapes. These personal records of lived experience run counter to perceptions of Labrador as an empty wilderness and an appropriate site for military tests.
