Vilhelm Hammershøi

Sunshine in the Drawing Room

1910
This is the last of four versions that Hammershøi painted of his living room at 30 Strandgade in Copenhagen, where he resided with his wife. He repeatedly depicted this room in spare interior scenes inspired by Dutch 17th-century genre painting and, in particular, the work of Jan Vermeer. As he reduced the contents of the room and concealed the identity of the female sitter, the artist created a sense of mystery around the nature of the scene.
