Study of Trees

In spite of the immediacy conveyed by the quick execution of this forest scene done in black chalk with white chalk highlights, Anthonie Waterloo’s large drawings of folio size were not always conceived as studies, but were sometimes intended for sale. The horizontal format and dense vegetation of this drawing envelop the viewer in luxuriant nature and draw us straight into the woodland.
