Simon de Vlieger

Study of a Tree

c. 1630-1653
This unusually large representation of an oak tree was drawn from life. Simon de Vlieger was interested in the contrast between the diagonal thrust of the trunk and the varied rhythms of the branches. The artist made several other studies of this same tree.
