Study for "Sumacs"

1915
While some artists painted urban winter scenes, others captured the unique colours and shapes of snowy landscapes. In particular, studies of trees allowed artists to experiment with patterning and texture to render snow-covered branches. Their works demonstrate a keen understanding of how light creates coloured reflections on the white snow; their palettes range from warm yellows and oranges to cool blues and purples depending on how light filters through the branches.
