Dil Hildebrand

Studio E

2010
Dil Hildebrand's paintings comprise multiple layers of oil on canvas that shroud picture with layers of expressionistic and abstract representation. Here, the subject is the artist's own workspace; each painting offering a different angle and view. "... the studio as the background image relates to the idea of the painting as a mirror of its own making" he explains. "Having been made in the same studio they depict, the paintings gain the effect of reflecting on their own origins." Hildebrand uses filmic references to discuss the painterly "filters" he employs to frame his imagery and its relationship to viewers - another aspect of these paintings' titles that mimic the name given to the sets of Hollywood production studios.
