X - Sentenced to six months in the Sainte-Pélagie prison in Paris for his part in the 1871 populist uprising known as the Paris Commune, Courbet's only subjects during his incarceration were the flowers and fruit brought to him by his sister Zoé and his friends. These still-lifes, some of which were reworked after his release, mark the summit of his final stage of work.
