St. George on Foot

c. 1502
St. George is here shown before a Levantine background consisting of a broad expanse of ocean dotted with tiny islands. This exotic scenery is an appropriate setting for the legend of the saint’s slaying of a plague-bearing dragon that envenomed the surrounding countryside. Standing triumphant over the lifeless body of his dragon adversary, he holds the banner of the Order of St. George (a cross within a circle), founded in 1468 by Emperor Frederick III in order to oppose the Turkish invasions.
