Joan Balzar

Spinner #1

1965
An important advocate of geometric abstract painting in Vancouver, Balzar developed an aesthetic vocabulary consisting of vibrant arcs, orbs and other curvilinear forms that create powerful sensory experiences for the viewer. This visual language emerged from the artist’s desire to marry art and science: her paintings are ripe with imagery evoking the atomic age, space travel and psychedelics.
