Gustave Doré

Souvenir of Loch Lomond

1875
Already well-known for his illustrations, Doré later turned to painting, considered by contemporaries to be more prestigious, but for which he had no formal training. His canvases were often more appreciated in Britain than in the professionalized art world of France. The grand scale and broad effects of light and weather, as much as the assertive touch of his brush, charge the work with characteristic melodrama – helping the artist stand out in a crowded art market.
