James Dickson Innes
South Wales, Evening
c. 1911-1912
Although James Dickson Innes made several trips to France to paint, he is best known as a painter of the Welsh countryside. He habitually took long walks over the mountains searching for the appropriate view and light, whose transient nature he sought to record. He was most productive in 1911–12, when he painted on small wooden panels at great speed, finishing one or two paintings a day. His urgent pace is thought to have been a reaction to a diagnosis of consumption at the age of 21. He died six years later.
