Julius Caesar Ibbetson

Smugglers Landing a Cargo on a Beach, Isle of Wight

c. 1788-1793
Preparatory for a print respectfully dedicated to the Honourable Commissioners of H.M. Customs and Excise, this watercolour shows smugglers unloading contraband before the portly figure of a coastguard officer, who apparently intends to share in the spoils. Ibbetson's genre scenes and landscapes often evoke those of Rowlandson and Wheatley, as well as George Morland.
