Albert Marquet

Small Square with Street Lamp, Paris

c. 1904
Although influenced by the Fauvists’ loose handling of colour and broad brushwork, Marquet generally preferred quieter colour tones than those used by his contemporaries. In this Parisian cityscape, the street lantern is the focal point of the sunlight-bathed urban square as long shadows fall upon the plaza. Tiny brushstrokes indicate pedestrians walking on the street. Marquet’s palette of yellows, greens and greys subtly captures the effects of the glowing late afternoon light.
