Louis-Philippe Hébert

Sigh of the Lake

1903
From the 1890s Louis-Philippe Hébert produced a number of small sculptures, many drawn from imagined or real episodes in the history of New France. The story of this idealized and eroticized Algonquin woman leaning against her nigog, or fishing spear, is clarified in the inscription on the base. "L'homme blanc fuirait-il la cabane algonquine?" (Would the white man flee the Algonquin cabinÉ) Exploited by the white colonist, will she be abandoned and left behind?
