Shaman Beckoning Spirits

2004
Category:
Shamans are intermediaries between animal spirits and people. The complex interconnected animal forms in this sculpture contrast with its austere frontal view, evoking the richness of the spirit world. Anghik Ruben’s interpretation conveys how Christianity changed the status of the shaman from a powerful leader to a beggar. The shaman is seen here begging Inuvialuit Inuit not to discard their traditional ways and knowledge.
