Newton was widely known as one of Canada’s foremost portrait artists, and figure studies were an important aspect of her work. Here, she depicts herself as independent, modern and urbane – an example of the new progressive Canadian woman. Her direct gaze and composed facial expression hints at her inner character, something she was exceptionally talented at capturing in her portraits.
