F.H. Varley

Self-portrait

1919
A painter for the Canadian War Memorials Fund, Varley arrived in France in August 1918. He wrote home: “You in Canada … cannot realize at all what war is like. You must see … the dead on the field, freakishly mutilated … You must have heard the screeching shells and have the shrapnel fall around you, whistling by you – until you’ve lived this … you cannot know.”
