Joanne Tod

See the Rushes

1991
Using photographic sources taken from advertisements or popular media, Tod’s paintings frequently overlap multiple views, disrupting pictorial space and questioning relationships of power and representation. This work extends the artist’s critique of commercial imagery and consumer desire, literally turning the image on its head. The luxurious interior is further interrupted by abstract forms that seem to float just above the painting’s surface.
