Damian Moppett

Sculpture with Candles

2007
Damian Moppett’s work takes a broad view of visual culture, referencing and combining mid-century-modern art histories with traditions in craft, ceramics, folk art, punk, popular music and much more. The artist’s own studio is also a recurrent subject in paintings that romantically record works in the light – or, as here, in the candlelit darkness – of his private workspace. As he says, “I want to show the stages of a sculpture’s evolution [that] may not be visible once finished. Works look different and have a completely different life when in the studio, compared to how they exist in a gallery.”
