Scipio Africanus Crowned by Fame

unknown
This drawing represents the crowning of the much-celebrated Roman general Scipio Africanus the Elder by an allegorical figure of Victory. In addition to his great military successes against Hannibal and the armies of Carthage, Scipio was also an individual of considerable cultural sophistication. The viewpoint indicates that this study was made for a ceiling decoration.
