Richard Long
Sandstone Spiral
1981
Aside from walking in landscapes on different continents and making temporary earthworks along the way, Richard Long makes various kinds of interior works, including photographs with texts and sculptures. Since classic earthworks cannot be exhibited because of their site-specificity and/or impermanence, some artists bring natural materials from outside and create works for the art gallery. "Sandstone Spiral" is an earthwork made indoors. Like most of Long's interior pieces, it is an extension of his outdoor works in both form and material. The spiral, having its roots in prehistory, is a recurring motif in Long's oeuvre, consistent with his attraction to ancient sites.
