Lisette Model was drawn to people of opposite ends of the social spectrum. While her images of the rich are harsh, those of ordinary people are infused with tenderness. This photograph shows an intimate moment shared between a sailor and a young woman. Amidst the hustle and bustle that typified the popular nightclub Sammy's Bowery Follies, the couple appears oblivious to the photographer. At Sammy's, well-heeled uptown denizens mingled with the socially marginalized. Model photographed Sammy's patrons and performers extensively; she also took her students there, likely to break down their inhibitions about photographing strangers.
