Saints Peter, John the Evangelist and Bartholomew

c. 1385-1390
This fragment came from an altarpiece comprising several panels. It was once at left, with the Virgin and Child at centre. Customarily, the choice of saints was motivated by local circumstances and personal interest. The men grasp bibles; Peter wraps his hand in his robe to prevent his bare flesh from touching the holy book. The rich decoration of such altarpieces honoured their subjects. The gilding is elaborately tooled and gold picks out details of the men’s dress. Frame: gilded and tooled wood, engaged to the panel. Original
