Jan van der (called Stradanus) Straet

Saint Peter

c. 1560-1565
This drawing is not an original composition but a copy after a Saint Peter frescoed by Sebastiano del Piombo in San Pietro in Montorio on the Janiculum in Rome, c. 1520. The principal painting in the Borgherini chapel was the "Flagellation of Christ" executed by Sebastiano from Michelangelo’s designs – one of the most influential recent paintings produced in Rome, so it is not surprising that Stradanus, like many artists, was attracted to this spot. He copied one of the massive figures from the lower part of the chapel, accentuating the daring figure-eight pose and the fluidity of the drapery folds.
