Domenikos (called El Greco) Theotokopoulos

Saint Francis and Brother Leo Meditating on Death

c. 1600-1605
El Greco reveals his debt to Venetian painting, adapting its methods and sharing its sensitivity to the aesthetic potential of paint itself. The animated brush strokes are characteristic – describing both the play of light over the surfaces and the visible traces of the artist’s brush, they are simultaneously controlled and expressive. He signed the work on the small piece of paper at lower right, placed as if stuck onto the surface.
