Paul Cézanne

Road at Auvers-sur-Oise

c. 1873-1874
In 1872 the artist moved to Auvers-sur-Oise, a small village of cottages on country lanes. The focus on nature, the brighter colours, and the use of the palette knife reveal the influence of Camille Pissarro, who lived in nearby Pontoise. Cézanne had less interest in the changing effects of light and atmosphere than did the Impressionists. As he explained: “I wanted to make Impressionism something solid and durable.”
