River Landscape with Tree

unknown
Influenced by the works of Pieter Molyn and Jan van Goyen, both represented in this installation, Salomon van Ruysdael is, like these artists, celebrated for works that explore the tonal rather than colouristic effects of light in atmosphere. Ruysdael was the uncle and teacher of Jacob van Ruisdael, a leading landscape artist of the second half of the seventeenth century.
