This work is part of a set of four paintings. The series consists of dark, watery scenes depicting silhouetted figures, a desolate beach, a submarine emerging from the water and, here, two imposing nuclear reactors in front of a troubled sky. Painted a year before the Chernobyl disaster, this piece exemplifies Koop’s interest in the impact of human activity on nature.
