Susan Dobson's recent photographs comment on the landscape of mass consumption. "I had previously looked at studies that tracked the life expectancy of commercial buildings," she explains, "I found that large retail outlets are built to last about 26 to 50 years and consequently I became interested in the temporary and provisional nature of this architecture." Shooting in the early morning before the parking lots filled with cars, Dobson's images focus on particular buildings that she greyed out in her prints to highlight their form. Architectural flare gives way to functionalism as the structures themselves become signs for the commercial enterprises they house, which are identified in the respective titles of the works.
