André Biéler

Procession at Sainte-Famille

1929
In rural Quebec, much of village life centred on community churches. Here, Biéler, a self-proclaimed member of the Beaver Hall Group, depicts the annual Fête-Dieu procession arriving at the chapel at Sainte-Famille. An affectionate record of a religious event, it is characterized by a restrained composition, strong colour scheme and abstract patterning.
