A clergyman - whose profile is worked out in a small thumbnail sketch above the hangman's noose - reads a doomed man the last rites, reminding him with perverse pleasure of his final chance for redemption. The prisoner seems surprised. The reality of his imminent fate is probably only just dawning on him.
