John Everett Millais

Portrait of the Marquis of Lorne

1884
Sir John Douglas Sutherland Campbell (1845-1914), Marquis of Lorne, was Canada's Governor General from 1878 to 1883. He and his wife, H.R.H. The Princess Louise, Queen Victoria's fourth daughter, shared a passion for the arts and were instrumental in the founding of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the National Gallery of Canada in 1880. This portrait by Millais is among the earliest gifts to the European collection. Lorne continued to take an interest in the country's affairs after his return to England and wrote several books about Canada. In 1900 he became the ninth Duke of Argyll.
